Sometimes conformity is good. An example: when a dancer conforms to the meathods of leading/following that work well. These are principles. But when dancers get so caught up in following a certain style exacttly, they can loose touch with the music.
So, I say, positive principles are worth confident conformity. But style is a personal flair that will keep you connected.
